En Hombre Irracional, Abe Lucas es un profesor de filosofía que está pasando por una enorme crisis existencial. No le ve sentido a su vida e intenta hacer algunos cambios, yéndose a dar clase a una Universidad muy pequeña.
Allí conoce a Rita Richards, una profesora que no está muy contenta con su matrimonio. Por eso se acerca a Abe, con el fin de iniciar con él una relación que la rescate de su matrimonio, pero Abe no quiere saber nada de ella.
Otra de las personas que conoce en su nuevo destino es a Jill Pollard. Ella es su mejor estudiante y eso hace que se conviertan en amigos. Ella tiene novio, del que está enamorada, pero lo cierto es que su profesor la atrae mucho.
Eso hace que los dos se acerquen mucho, demasiado, pues Abe se enamora de ella. Jill siente una fascinación profunda por su profesor, tanta que ésta no decrece a pesar de que Abe demuestra que tiene problemas mentales serios.
